Should You Upgrade Your Phone Every Year?

Smartphones evolve so fast that even 1-2 years old phones look outdated. But the question is, should you keep upgrading your smartphone every year when a new shiny phone is launched?

Short answer — yes, you should upgrade one each year if you have some extra cash to burn. Even if your current phone is damaged, you can get it repaired for just $100-250, there is no need to get a new one. And, obviously, it’s true for both Android and iPhone users.

upgrade your phone every year

Followings are the reasons why you should not upgrade your cell phone every year:

1. You don’t need most of the features

Smartphones are advertised as having some extraordinary features that will completely change your life but in reality, it doesn’t happen. You don’t even need most of the features.

For example, most of the newly launched smartphones claim to have a better camera than their previous-gen phones, but you will hardly notice any differences and even if you do, it was not required, the previous model was just working fine.

Unless you want a feature that’s actually required (for example 5G or NFC) there is no point in buying a new one.

2. You get software updates for years

Most of the Android and iPhones keep getting new software updates for years. For example, iPhone 6S was released in 2015 but it will get software updates till 2022. Clearly, you don’t need to worry about outdated and insecure software.

Yes, Android devices do not provide updates as long as Apple devices but they do for at least 2-3 years so you should be good to go.

3. Batteries can be replaced

Yes, it’s true that smartphone batteries start underperforming after a year and a half but batteries can be replaced at a very low price.

Getting a new iPhone these days will not cost you any less than $1000 but just getting the battery replaced on your old iPhone will only cost you $200-250 and you can again keep using it for almost a year.

We, at XG Cell Phone Repair, Katy, TX, provide affordable and same-day battery replacement services for all kinds of smartphone devices.

4. Yearly upgrades are not a necessity

If you just use your phone to take pictures, use social media, and for talking and texting, there is no need to get a cellphone with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, they are really very unnecessary. But if you’re a heavy user and play a lot of games, it may make sense.

It’s true that yearly upgrades are a luxury, not a necessity.

5. Broken devices can be fixed too

If your devices fell down and now the screen is broken, you can easily get it repaired just for a few hundred bucks.

Some common types of cell phone repairs that we normally see are:

  • Broken screen repair/replacement
  • Broken back glass repair/replacement
  • Battery replacement
  • Power button related issues
  • Volume button related issues
  • Camera and speaker-related issues

And, you can get all of these repairs at a very affordable price.
